- Status 27.10.2026daylight only
- Winter 2026/27not announced
- Karakol → Almaty≈400 km · 7–8 h
- Price per carfrom $440
Karkyra (Kyrgyz side) / Kegen (Kazakh side) is the shortest road from Karakol to Almaty: about 400 km and 7–8 hours, against roughly 635 km and 10–11 hours via Bishkek and Korday. It is a daylight post: the Kyrgyz side announced 24/7 operation in August 2025, but the Kazakh side has been reported working about 08:00–18:00 Kyrgyz time. As of 27 October 2026 no regime for winter 2026/27 has been announced. A private car Karakol → Almaty costs from $440 per car. Reach the post by mid-afternoon, and use Korday if you hold a Kyrgyz e-visa.
Is the Karkara border open right now?
Yes, in daylight hours — as of 27 October 2026 we found no closure notice and no announced winter schedule. Headlines from different years contradict each other, so here is the sequence we could verify:
| Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| May 2019 | rebuilt Karkyra post reopens | RideKZ check |
| 25 Aug 2025 | Kyrgyz side announces 24/7, year-round work | travellers’ reports (eurasia.travel) |
| Feb 2026 | Kazakh side limits crossings to daylight, 08:00–18:00 Kyrgyz time | travellers’ reports (eurasia.travel) |
| 21 Jul–31 Aug 2026 | extended summer hours 08:00–21:00 Bishkek time | RideKZ check, 13 Oct 2026 |
| 27 Oct 2026 | no winter 2026/27 regime announced on either side | RideKG check |
A post is only as open as its stricter side: plan on daylight only until both border services publish 24-hour work as in force.
What are the hours, and what time zone?
Plan on roughly 08:00–18:00 Kyrgyz time (UTC+6). Kazakhstan is one hour behind (UTC+5), so 18:00 in Karkyra is 17:00 in Kegen. Every car is inspected, and on summer weekends a queue of dozens of cars builds up — arriving an hour before closing risks being turned back. Our drivers aim to be at the barrier by 15:00.
Will Karkara be open in winter 2026/27?
Not announced as of 27 October 2026. Historically it was treated as a May–October route, and the Kegen plateau (about 1,800–2,000 m) drifts with snow. For Karakol ⇄ Almaty between December and March, plan on the Balykchy–Bishkek–Korday road. We confirm the post the day before; if Karkyra is shut, your driver goes via Korday at the same price, or you move the date or get a full refund.
Is the Kyrgyz e-visa accepted at Karkyra?
Do not count on it. RideKZ checked the official list of land checkpoints for e-visa holders on 13 October 2026: it names Ak-Zhol (Korday), Ak-Tilek, Chaldybar and Chon-Kapka — not Karkyra. Visa-free travellers (EU, UK, US, Japan, Korea, Gulf and others) can use Karkyra normally.
Karkara or Korday: which way from Karakol?
| Going to | Best crossing | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Almaty, May–October | Karkyra / Kegen | 3–4 h shorter, via the Karkara valley; combine with Charyn |
| Almaty, December–April | Korday | 24 h and year-round |
| Almaty on a Kyrgyz e-visa (into KG) | Korday | on the e-visa list |
| Almaty airport, early flight | Korday (night) or Karkyra (day before) | Karkyra closes in the evening |
What is the road like?
Karakol → Tyup → the Karkara valley (summer pastures) on paved road, about 2–2.5 hours to the post; on the Kazakh side the last stretch after Karkara village is reported rough and unpaved, then the Kegen plateau and Shelek to Almaty. There is no ATM or exchange at the post and mobile signal is patchy — bring some tenge or US dollars.
How much is a private car on this route?
