Transfers in Kyrgyzstan
From Manas airport to the end of the Alay valley. Kyrgyzstan is small on the map and slow on the road: 400 km to Karakol is six hours, 640 km to Osh is a full day over two passes. A private car is the way most visitors move.
How Kyrgyzstan travel works
Public transport is marshrutkas and shared taxis that leave when full and stop at bus stations, not at your guesthouse. They are cheap and fine for the main roads. For the mountains — Song-Kul, Kel-Suu, Altyn-Arashan, Lenin Peak — you need a 4x4 and a driver who knows the fords.
