The road
Bishkek bypass, then the A365 through Tokmok and the Boom gorge — a narrow canyon with rockfall nets where the road follows the Chu river — and out onto the lake at Balykchy. Good asphalt all the way.
Worth stopping
- Burana Tower (11th-century minaret), a 15-minute detour near Tokmok — add $15 for a 45-minute stop.
- Fruit and smoked-fish stalls in the Boom gorge and at Balykchy.
Good to know
- In October the Boom gorge has scheduled rock-clearing works with one-lane traffic 09:00–15:00 — we plan around it.
- If you land at night we can drive straight through (night supplement $20) or take you to a Bishkek hotel and leave in the morning.

Is there a cheaper way?
Shared marshrutkas run from Bishkek western bus station for 400–500 som per person, but you first need to get from the airport to the bus station and they leave when full. A private car is door to door.
Can you drop us at a resort east of Cholpon-Ata?
Yes. Resorts in Bosteri and Kara-Oi are on the way; for Tamchy or Chok-Tal it is the same price. Further east (Ananyevo, Tyup) — ask and we confirm the price in WhatsApp.
