Almaty → Karakol transfer
Almaty to Karakol has two land routes. Via the Kegen / Karkara border it is about 400 km and 7–8 hours, crossing the steppe east of the Tian Shan. Via Bishkek it is 635 km and 10–11 hours but uses the 24-hour Korday border. We choose by season and border hours.

The road
Kegen route: Almaty → Shelek → Kegen on asphalt, the Kegen–Karkara crossing in a high valley, then down to Tyup and Karakol. The Kyrgyz side to Karakol is asphalt. Bishkek route: Korday border, Bishkek, north shore of Issyk-Kul.

Good to know
- The Kegen–Karkara crossing historically worked 8:00–18:00 from about May to October; Kazakhstan ratified 24-hour operation in January 2026 but winter dates are not yet confirmed. We check before every booking.

Historically it was seasonal. Check with us: we confirm the current regime before you pay and route via Bishkek if needed (+$60 per car for the longer road).
Is there a flight?
Asman Airlines has flown Almaty–Karakol twice a week in the ski season; the car is the backup when flights are cancelled.
