The road
Day 1: Almaty → Charyn (3 h), Valley of Castles walk, on to Saty (2 h). Day 2: Kaindy lake by local 4x4 shuttle, Kolsai-1, then Kegen–Karkara border and Karakol (4–5 h).

- Only when the Kegen crossing is open (historically May–October). Outside that window we do it as Almaty → Charyn → Kolsai and back, then Almaty → Karakol via Bishkek.
