How to get to Altyn-Arashan and Ala-Kul from Karakol
The last 16 km to the hot springs are UAZ-only. Get to Karakol by car — from Bishkek $230, from Manas airport $250 — and take the jeep from Ak-Suu.

Altyn-Arashan is a valley of hot springs at about 2,600 m above Karakol, and Ala-Kul is a glacial lake at 3,560 m reached only on foot. To Altyn-Arashan you drive Karakol → Ak-Suu on asphalt, then about 16 km of riverbed and boulders that only a Soviet UAZ jeep handles (2–2.5 hours with two fords). Our sister service Arashan Transfer runs it: a shared seat about 3,750 som return, a whole UAZ-469 about 25,000 som. Ala-Kul is a 3–4 day trek (about 50 km) over a pass of about 3,860 m, usually July to mid-September. Getting to Karakol: private car from Bishkek $230 per car. Checked 27 October 2026.
Can a normal car or our 4x4 drive to Altyn-Arashan?
No. A Land Cruiser is not the right tool: the track is a riverbed with fords and boulders. Locals use UAZ-469 and UAZ-452 jeeps. We therefore do not sell this stretch on RideKG; it is booked through our sister service on the Karakol → Altyn-Arashan page. Walking up from Ak-Suu takes most of a day.
What does the jeep cost?
| Option | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shared seat, return | ≈3,750 som per person | daily departure at 08:00 in season |
| Whole UAZ-469 | ≈25,000 som | up to 4 people + bags |
| Whole UAZ-452 “bukhanka” | ≈31,000 som | larger groups |
How do I reach Ala-Kul?
Only on foot. The common loop starts in the Karakol valley, climbs to the lake (3,560 m), crosses the Ala-Kul pass (about 3,860 m) and descends to Altyn-Arashan and Ak-Suu: about 50 km in 3–4 days. Trekking guides run it from about 1 July to 20 September; snow, high rivers and wind can close the pass. We drive you to the trailhead from Karakol and pick you up in Ak-Suu at an agreed time.
