Song-Kul is a high alpine lake at 3,016 m with summer yurt camps and no village, no shop and no public transport to the shore. The usual way is Bishkek → Kochkor on asphalt (about 3 hours), then about 90 km of gravel over the Kalmak-Ashuu pass (3,446 m) or the gentler Tuz-Ashuu from the south. Bishkek → Song-Kul is about 300 km and 6.5 hours by 4x4. The road is usually open June–September; in May and October passes can be snowed in. A private 4x4 is $450 per car from Bishkek, or from $150 from Kochkor. Checked 27 October 2026.

Is there a bus or marshrutka to Song-Kul?

No. Marshrutkas run Bishkek → Kochkor and Bishkek → Naryn; nothing scheduled goes up to the lake. From Kochkor travellers either hire a car or arrange a horse trek through the community-tourism office. That is why people book a car: it climbs the pass, waits at the camp if you want a day trip, or comes back for you on the day you choose.

Which road: Kalmak-Ashuu or Tuz-Ashuu?

RoadFromWhat it is like
Kalmak-Ashuu (3,446 m)Kochkor via Sary-Bulakshortest from Bishkek; gravel switchbacks, a minivan manages it in dry weather
Tuz-Ashuuthe Naryn roadgentler gradient, longer; good if you continue to Naryn
Kazarman roadthe south (Jalal-Abad side)combine with Bishkek → Osh via Kazarman — June to early October only

When can I go?

The yurt camps work in summer and the road is usually passable June–September. In May and October the passes can be snowed in — we confirm a few days ahead. Nights at 3,000 m are cold even in July: bring a warm layer. In winter the lake is frozen and the camps are closed; we do not sell Song-Kul then.

Where do I sleep?

In a yurt camp on the shore — the only accommodation at the lake. Our route page gives about 1,000–1,500 som per person with dinner and breakfast; camps differ, and we can book one for you. The commercial guide in Sources lists the camps by shore.
