Kel-Suu (also written Kol-Suu) lies in the border zone south-east of Naryn, so foreigners need a border-zone permit. Travellers reported in December 2024 that it takes from about 6 days to 2 weeks, is applied for in person (not online) and can be arranged through the CBT Naryn tourist office for about 2,000 som per person — not an official source, so confirm before you plan. The drive is Naryn → At-Bashy on asphalt, then dirt tracks across the Ak-Sai plateau to the Kok-Kiya yurt camps: about 260 km and 6 hours by 4x4; the last stretch to the lake is on foot or horseback. A 4x4 from Naryn is $580 per car. Checked 27 October 2026.
Do I need a permit for Kel-Suu?
Yes. The lake is in the border zone. In a December 2024 travellers’ thread one person said it takes up to six days, another about two weeks; there is no online application. Apply before you book the car and send us the permit dates — we do not drive into the zone without it.
