Naryn: where the expensive vehicles start

A small town on the way to nowhere convenient, which is precisely why it matters. Everything reached from Naryn is remote, has no public transport, and costs enough per vehicle that finding one other person changes the trip.

The three things people come here for

Kel-Suu — five to eight hours each way on a track, 13,000–20,000 som for the vehicle, and a border permit applied for a week or two ahead. Tash-Rabat — a stone caravanserai in a side valley, commonly chained with Song-Kul into a loop. Song-Kul from the eastern side, as an alternative to the Kochkor approach. All three are vehicle trips with no scheduled alternative.

Why Naryn is the best town on this board to post from

Two reasons. First, the money: at 13,000–20,000 som a vehicle, one extra person in the car is worth several thousand som to everyone in it — nowhere else in Kyrgyzstan is a single extra passenger worth that much. Second, the timing: the Kel-Suu permit forces a fortnight of lead time, so people here are planning far enough ahead to actually find each other, which is the thing that normally breaks a board like this.

Permits

Arranged through a local agency, not by you at a window somewhere, and the lead time — one to two weeks, more in July and August — is what actually constrains the trip. What it costs and how the process now works is on the permits page.

These are reference figures collected from public sources and travellers' own reports, not quotes — RideKG sells nothing. Drivers negotiate, fuel moves, and a bad road year changes everything. Treat them as the number to start haggling from.

Frequently asked

Is there public transport from Naryn to Kel-Suu?
No, and no shared taxis either. It is a hired 4x4 or nothing, which is why the per-vehicle price dominates the trip.
How do I get a border permit in Naryn?
Through a local agency in Naryn or wherever you are booking transport. Apply one to two weeks before you travel, more in July and August. You cannot get one at the checkpoint.
Can I combine Kel-Suu and Tash-Rabat?
Yes, and people do — both are Naryn-side and both need a vehicle. A combined loop is a better listing to post than either one alone because it gives a wider date window to match on.
