Sary-Mogol and Lenin Peak Base Camp: getting there and splitting the last leg

The Alay valley south of Osh, with the Pamir wall on the far side. Getting to the village is cheap and public; getting from the village to Base Camp is not, and that is the leg this board is for.

Osh to the village is the easy part

Marshrutkas leave Osh's New Bus Station (Lenin Avenue at Osmonova) for Sary-Mogol at about 300 som a person, four to five hours, departing when full around 14:00. A shared taxi on the same road is about 400 som and leaves sooner. Neither needs sharing arranged in advance.

The village to Base Camp is where it costs

Transfers to Lenin Peak Base Camp are arranged through the guesthouses or CBT Sary-Mogol next to the bazaar, and — unusually for a leg this well travelled — nobody publishes the price. We could not find a single dated figure for it anywhere, which we would rather admit than guess at. It is a vehicle price, it seats several people, and it is the obvious thing to split. If you have done it recently, tell us what you paid and it goes in this table with your date on it.

Sary-Mogol guesthouses run $15–20 a person with breakfast — Tilek, Peak Lenin and Hamza around $15, CBT Sary-Mogol about $20. English is spoken at CBT, which is also where most people sort horses, guides and the Base Camp ride.

The Pamir Highway connection

Osh is also the northern end of the Pamir Highway, and Osh→Murghab in a shared 4x4 runs about $30 a person for twelve hours. That corridor is the one place in Central Asia where ride-sharing between travellers already reliably works — Caravanistan's forum has a whole sub-board for it.
