Sixteen kilometres, an hour and a half, and a river track that eats normal cars. The vehicle is a fixed price no matter who is in it, which makes this the single best-value thing to share in Kyrgyzstan.
You can walk the 16 km from Ak-Suu village in about four to five hours, uphill, on the road. Or you can take a Soviet UAZ up the same track in ninety minutes for around 8,000 som — which is either an eye-watering amount of money or a rounding error, depending entirely on how many of you are in it. Alone it is roughly $91. With four it is roughly $23 each, and the walk stops being worth it. That is the whole calculation, and it is why the noticeboard at Duet Hostel has existed for years.
Marshrutkas run from Karakol to Ak-Suu village constantly — 50 som a person, plus 30 som if you have a big trekking bag, roughly every ten minutes from 07:20, twenty minutes on the road. The 4x4s wait at the far end of the village. Getting to Ak-Suu cheaply and finding a vehicle there is almost always better value than arranging the whole thing from Karakol town.
Most people walk out — down the valley to Ak-Suu, or over the pass from Ala-Kul. If you want a vehicle waiting, that is a separate negotiation and a separate price: agencies quote around $145 for a same-day return and $170 if the driver comes back for you the next day. If you are hiking out, you only need the one-way price, so say so clearly when you negotiate.
Karakol / Ak-Suu → Altyn-Arashan, 4x4 (UAZ) costs 8,000 som whether one person or 4 are in it. That is the whole reason this board exists — the price does not change, only the number of people paying it.
Filling the vehicle saves the person who would otherwise ride alone 6,000 som (≈ $69) on this one leg.

These are reference figures collected from public sources and travellers' own reports, not quotes — RideKG sells nothing. Drivers negotiate, fuel moves, and a bad road year changes everything. Treat them as the number to start haggling from.
Worth being honest about: these are per person and a buddy saves you nothing on them.

Per-person costs, paid at the door in cash. Nothing here is negotiable and nothing here gets cheaper by sharing — which is exactly why we have put them in their own table.
Put in the price you were actually quoted for the vehicle and how many of you there are.
